Opportunity of Education for the Dunami Eight

A chance encounter between a local community activist and eight school-age children playing on dirt road during school hours became a compelling story of community action, unlocked dreams, and compassion.

Mallam Nuhu Yakubu Salihi met the Dunami playing during school hours in early November, 2019 on his way to the farm in the outskirts of the Dunami community of Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria. Though such isn’t an uncommon sight in a society with an unusually high out of school children burden, even by Nigerian standards- Jigawa has the fifth highest number of out of school children in Nigeria – Mr Salihi rather chose to enquire.

All eight children told him of their desire to acquire education to become law enforcement, teachers, journalists, and doctors. Since primary education is free in Jigawa, their only barrier to school were only uniforms, school bags, shoes, and writing materials. Mallam Salihi went public with this for help.

Unik Impact Foundation is honoured to fund their enrollment in the community public primary school in Dunami, as it resolves to continue to support their journey into the future.

Mallam Yakubu Nuhu Salihi and the Dunami Community Development Association are important community assets whose services are critical to local voluntary development initiatives.
